3 out of 4 families headed by a single mother live in poverty.
More than one third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese.
Obese adolescents are more likely to become obese adults.
Nearly 50% of all African American women have diabetes.
At least one out of every five U.S. teenagers has abnormal cholesterol levels.
Overweight and obesity are associated with a 52 percent increased risk of a diagnosis of asthma.

Yet overall healthcare expenditures and negative health indicators for chronic diseases such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease are steadily on the rise. At the heart of this challenge are young mothers raising the next generation of our society with less and less access to resources, eduction, and instruction on what to do to provide healthy options and influence healthier lifestyles for their children and futures.
Every Mother wants to be healthy and even more so, every mother wants and needs their children to be healthy.
HEALTHY MOMS HEALTHY KIDS! : MADRES SANAS NINÕS SALUDABLES! , an initiative of Baraka Community Wellness, is an evidence based program designed to engage at-risk young mothers and children in fitness, nutrition, health coaching, and social support programming.
Our program offers:
We offer family group exercise classes (for mothers and children ages 7 years of age and older), led by certified trainers and group instructors, that focus on the importance of physical activity and the development of fitness skills. These classes are designed to enable participants to develop the self-efficacy necessary to engage in physical activity on a regular basis.
ZUMBA • STRENGTH TRAINING • YOGA • AEROBICS
We offer counseling with a registered dietitian who provides nutrition education through weekly workshops, cooking demonstrations, supermarket visits, and individual dietary coaching.
3. Health Coaching
We offer group and individual coaching provided by certified health coaches and healthcare advocates. Our coaches support mothers as they overcome barriers and realize their power and capacity to sustain healthy living habits.
4. Social Support
With the support of our licensed social workers (LICSW's) we work with mothers to navigate social issues, identify resources, and move towards quality of life improvements.
WE MOVE THE DIAL
Our outcomes are not measured by subjective self-reporting.
We analyze data for empirical metrics and outcomes.
Upon enrollment in the program we administer health assessments, fitness assessments, and gather behavioral baselines for all participants. We monitor individual progress on a weekly base and develop mechanisms to prevent relapse.
Post measurements are taken at the end of the 12-week program after 3 months, after 6 months, after 1 year, and after two years.
All participants are welcome to re-enter the program after their 12-week cycle if additional support is needed.
